There are many benefits to using a wireless security camera, especially in these times when wireless technology has really become a reliable and effective method of data transfer. But installing an outdoor wireless security camera isn’t without obstacles and there are a few limitations we have to keep in mind to make the best decisions that lead to the set up and install step of the process. It is important to plan things carefully and assess the conditions of the environment where the camera will be installed.
While being wireless does offer a level of flexibility to move the camera to different positions without having to redo the cabling system of your infrastructure there are limitations. The first is the range and signal strength between transmitter and receiver. This depends on the specific frequency that is being used and the technology of the equipment. Beyond that most package labels will tell you the maximum range which is what you could expect under perfect circumstances. This assumes a clear line of sight between the outdoor wireless security camera and the recording system. Obviously this is not possible and any obstacles like thick concrete walls or large metal objects could seriously detriment the signal strength.
Another limitation to the freedom to install your camera anywhere you want is the power supply. The term wireless is only descriptive of the mode through which video data is transferred. Currently the technology to provide power wirelessly has not quite become commercially available. Without building codes to regulate the availability of power outlets on the outside of a building it can a bit of a riddle to get your camera a reliable source of juice. There are battery packs available which will need to be recharged on a regular basis. If the camera will be installed high out of reach from vandals it could make sense to install a solar panel that will keep the battery pack charged. This will minimize the amount of maintenance required.
