I was recently faced with a dilemma; I was on my way to college and I needed a laptop. Sounds like a simple question but in fact it’s easy to fall for the marketing hype and sales tactics when shopping for the best laptops for college students. I settled for an Apple Mac Book, the 2.26 GHZ model with 2GB of RAM and a 250GB hard drive. Let me explain why I eventually settled on the Mac Book.
Firstly it’s small, light and easy to move from lecture to lecture. Secondly it’s fast – I test drove a few different machines running different operating systems and OS X (the Apple operating system) just blew me away. Lastly it’s every so stylish.
That’s the pros, and now let me focus for a moment on the cons.
All Apple products are expensive, there’s no denying it, but they do last. I spoke to a few, older friends before investing in my new laptop, and the resounding theme was to avoid the trap of buying a cheap products. “Buy cheap, pay twice” my brother said, “Buy a Mac Book and you’ll be still be using when you’re graduating med school.”
I wasn’t sold there so I went to my local Apple store and took a test drive, granted the single mouse pad button took a bit of getting used to, but after about 10 minutes the laptop felt like I’d owned it for years. I fell in love the glossy screen, and the feel of the keyboard. In fact the whole device just oozes quality and feel well built. It’s quiet and fast. After a few months of ownership the glossy screen is suffering from an abundance of fingerprint marks, but that is nothing the cleaning cloth Apple provide can’t cope with. Having used it on campus I have a little chuckle to myself when I see my fellow students lugging around 17 inch and even 19 inch laptops. My 13 inch fits the bill every time. As far as laptops for students, the Apple Macbook gets two thumbs up from this satisfied customer.
