How to Connect to the Internet Wirelessly
May 31st
Since people are doing more and more work digitally, connection to the Internet has become very important. Additionally, people have started replacing their desktops with laptops and have started connection to the Internet using wireless networks.
Laptops can be connected to the Internet mainly in three ways:
Wireless Internet Connection using WiFi
Wireless LAN or WiFi has become the most common means of establishing a wireless connection to the Internet. Most of the mini laptop computers available in the market come with in-built WiFi Adapter or modem. Additionally, the WiFi modems are also available in form of USB WiFi dongle which can establish a wireless connection by attaching to USB port of the laptop.
Wireless Internet Connection using 3G Broadband
Nowadays, Internet connection through 3G broadband is widely available. The data is transferred over 3G telecom network and the connection works even on train and car provided the mobile phone signal is available. This technology is however still evolving and separate modems are required by the laptops. Most of the laptops currently establish the Internet connection over the 3G broadband through USB modems available from telecom network operators.
Wired connection using LAN or DSL
Traditionally, the high speed Internet connections are achieved by connecting laptop to either Local Area Network (LAN) or Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) line through wires. The wired connections have much higher data speed than wireless connections, meaning it would take much less delay for website pages to load on your laptop. Also video streaming like videos on you tube would not require lot of buffering time. Although the Internet speed in this case is much higher than the 3G broadband connections, the connectivity is limited to particular place.
Connection to Internet has come a long way. Previously the modem drivers were required to be separately installed, but with the modern operating systems the drivers are pre-installed and the laptop can be immediately connected to the Internet without much installation. For the wireless connections, the laptop just need to search for the available wireless networks and the user is required to input the user name and password to access the particular connection. Similarly, the laptops can be connected to the Internet using the wired LAN or DSL wires.
How to Fax Online: Sending Faxes
May 31st
From time to time, many people who do not own a fax machine will need to send a fax or receive fax online for free. While it may be possible to use someone else’s fax machine or go to a mail center, it is easier to send a fax from the convenience of a person’s personal computer; especially if the faxed documents will come in the form of a Word document or some other user-created correspondence. Internet fax sites do exist in both paid and free forms, allowing users to send faxes from their at-home or business computers.
If you are unsure how to fax online, sending Internet faxes is a relatively easy process. First, a person must find an online fax site. There are plenty of combination paid/free fax sites available and users can select which option, paid or free, they prefer.
Depending on the fax’s purpose, there are times when it is better to use the paid option, as most free fax sites will include advertisements on your recipient’s cover sheet. While this may be a perfectly acceptable practice to send from one friend or family member to another, if sending an important document, such as a resume, first impressions are everything; so you will want to be as professional as possible and send a paid, ad-free fax.
Users who may be unfamiliar how to send a fax online, will want to upload their documents and fill out the fax’s information including recipient’s name, fax number, sender’s email address, telephone number and name. This information will appear on the coversheet and the sender’s email address will be used to send an acceptance confirmation. Before sending the fax, and email will be sent to the fax sender’s email account where a link must be clicked on to confirm intention to send to the fax. From document upload to email confirmation, this easy process should take no more than ten minutes.
How to Fix Alternator Problems
May 30th
Having alternator issues can be one of the most frustrating things that you can have happen to your car. It’s one of those parts that can cause havoc on all the other systems in the car.
The alternator is a device that converts the energy that comes from your engine and turns it into electricity that charges your battery. And you car battery runs the electrical system in your car. Not just a few electrical things, the entire system. It doesn’t just affect starting the ignition, although we all know how important that component is.
That includes your headlights, dashboard lights, interior lights, trunk light, radio, your air system’s fan and other electrical devices in your car. As you can see, without the alternator or battery, you’re without much of what runs your car.
Causes of Alternator Problems
A number of things can cause problems with your alternator. It could be a short in your electrical circuits that is causing you battery to drain, even when the car isn’t running. If that happens, the alternator has to work overtime to recharge your battery, and it’s not designed to constantly have to do that.
Another thing that might cause a problem is your car computer system. There is a ‘smart’ system in your car that tells your alternator when to charge and when to stop charging the battery. If the computer gives wrong commands to the alternator, it can cause it to overwork or not work hard enough.
How to Fix Alternator Malfunctions
A great way to test any electrical system in the car is to have a multimeter like the Fluke 87-5, which can tell you if your car battery is having voltage issues.
You car battery should have at least 13 volts on it when it is fully charged. If it gets much lower, your car won’t start. Most cars won’t start if the battery goes lower than say 11.5 volts. By the way, the standard car battery is 13 volts. The reason why they call them 12 volt batteries is because mechanics are superstitious and don’t like the number 13. At least that is what I’ve been told.
Another thing that might be handy if you’re having alternator problems is a car jump starter. It’s basically a portable device that will jump your battery without the need for another vehicle.
What to Consider When You Are Purchasing a Subwoofer Amplifier
May 28th
A lot of people who enjoy a good home stereo system will often buy other pieces of equipment to go with it. A very popular piece of equipment to purchase is a 15″ subwoofer. Before you go out and buy one though, you should know what the subwoofer is and what it will do for you.
The Function of a Subwoofer Amplifier
This device was made to be a speaker that resonated sound that a human is not able to hear. The sound that it creates is more felt than heard by a human being, because most of the time, humans can not hear anything less than 40 hertz, but one of these subwoofers can produce sound at 10 or 20 hertz.
What to Look for in a Sub Woofer
First you need to consider how low a sound you want the subwoofer to produce. By listening to a recording of the music produced by a organ in church, you will discover how important the low sound is. That is the reason it is usually recommended that you purchase the lowest hertz that you are able to.
Next, you should consider how sensitive you want the speaker to be. The loudness of your sound will be determined by how sensitive the subwoofer is. If you were playing a guitar that was hooked up to a speaker, you would get twice as much sound from a 103db speaker than you would from a 100db. If you want your sound to be louder or are using an application that is industrial, you will want a speaker that can handle more sensitivity.
Lastly, you need to think about the frequency response, because it is very crucial. For many people, the decision is made because of what speaker sounds better to them. If a subwoofer is any good, you will enjoy listening to it. Subwoofers that are not of good quality will make listening to your music a horrifying experience. You should always listen to the speaker before you decide to purchase it. Finding the quality of the speaker by listening to it can not be explained with words, so if you are unsure about anything, have someone who knows what they are doing listen to the subwoofer before you buy it.
Finding out what you need to consider before purchasing a 15″ Subwoofer is easy. You only have to think through a couple of things. Do that and listen for quality sound, so that you know you are getting something that will last. Your new speakers should complement your music while it is playing, not overpower it. That is the reason you should look at and listen to your speakers before you buy them.
ERP in Insurance Accounting Software
May 27th
Recently a large trend in accounting software has been the move towards integration. It appears that this trend is not lost on accounting software for insurance agencies. Traditionally QuickBooks was the software of choice for insurance agencies, but there seems to be a move towards a more integrated solution.
Accounting is an important part of managing an insurance agency, but it is not the only part. In the past most insurance accounting software consisted of using QuickBooks and trying to get QuickBooks to integrate with other parts of the agency, like human resources, payroll, and sales. This integration was a piecemeal solution, but it appears that the insurance industry is looking for a more comprehensive accounting solution. Enter enterprise resource planning (ERP).
In a nutshell, ERP means that every piece of data that your organization tracks (employee data, sales information, premium discounts, accounting data, etc.) all goes into one central database. This central database is extremely important and secured by controls. With all of the data in one place it is easy to manage it and ensure it is accurate. It is also easy to share data across departments within the insurance agency.
Say the human resource department needs information on revenues and expenses, they can get that data by interfacing with the centralized database. They no longer need to head over to accounting and ask for the information, they can get it themselves. In addition, this allows insurance sales reps to access pertinent data they may need like special promotions without having to come and talk with management first.
If everyone in the insurance organization has access to the data, won’t it be a bit insecure? No, it won’t and here’s why: when installing an ERP insurance accounting software program you can decide who gets access to what information. A manager can be in charge of assigning rights, usually known as a database manager.
One company out there right now that offers this type of software is Gen4systems. They specialize in providing a comprehensive accounting system for insurance agencies. This means you don’t need four different types of software to manage everything, you just have one to manage it all.
One of the downsides of an ERP system is that there is a bit of a learning curve. Chances are some of your accounting staff are already used to using the current insurance accounting software and will not want to make the switch. There is a bit of a learning curve, but most techies seem to believe that the benefits of centralized data and entity-wide data sharing outweigh the costs.
Whether your insurance agency is currently using QuickBooks or some other solution for accounting purposes, you may want to consider moving to an entity-wide system. Having your data in one spot aides in keeping it accurate and up-to-date. In addition the control over who has access to what makes managing information within your insurance agency quite a bit easier. Finally, your insurance agency could save time because data sharing between agents and back office staff will be much more efficient.
Get a SQL Server GREP Command Line Text Search
May 21st
SQL server grep is a command line text search utility written originally for Unix. The origin of the term is the first letters of Global / Regular Expression / Print series of text editor instructions. The function is used to search for text matching a set of conditions for a given destination. It was no surprise that when developers started coding for SQL Server, it became a common function.
The only probable limitation for this utility is that the destination database should be in *.txt format. As the name suggests, this particular command is used to look for ‘Global’ standard input for a specified ‘Regular Expression’ and ‘Print’ it to an output. The query line for this function is pretty simple. For example, if you want to search this article (assuming that it is saved as a .txt extension named SQL_SERVER_GREP.txt), for the word ‘function’; your command line will be:
grep function SQL_SERVER_GREP.txt
The function can also accept several useful options such as:
- To print matching lines with block number
- To display number of matching lines
- To match cases insensitively
- To censor error messages
- To display non matching lines
Versatility of the GREP Function
The function also supports operands like pattern_list and file. The STDIN or standard input is used only when there are no ‘file’ operands specified. While running this particular utility, take extra care when using characters in pattern_list that could also interest the command interpreter. Use the pattern_list command in single quotes to be on the safe side.
The best thing about the SQL Server Grep utility command is that it has been enhanced to be upwardly compatible with the historical functionality of egrep and fgrep commands too! It therefore comes as no surprise that when developers run SWL queries for expressions in *.txt files, the grep figures up in their favorites and adds them to the results.
DVI Splitter Cable Tips And Tricks
May 21st
At some point in your life you are going to sit down and say to yourself, “I sure wish I knew how to split a DVI signal to two devices.” When that day comes, it is important that you have done your research and learned some DVI splitter cable tips and tricks. The most important thing to recognize when splitting a DVI cable is that it tends to be more complicated that you expect. It is not just a matter of placing a Y-cable onto your output device and enjoying the effects of splitting your signal. Here are some DVI cable splitting tips to get you started.
DVI Splitter Cable Help
The first key to understanding DVI is that this standard comes in a variety of flavors, each with their own intended purpose and design. DVI-D (digital) and DVI-A (analog) are the two most basic types of DVI. The third type is called DVI-I (integrated) and allows for both analog and digital signals through the same cable. Each cable type is identified by different pin arrangements and can be identified by the pattern.
In order for a DVI splitter to send the signal to two different input devices, the output card usually must be able to send out a dual-link signal. Many video card manufacturers mistakenly use this to advertise two separate output ports. With splitting, this means that a single port can send two simultaneous signals rather than the typical single-link output.
Assuming your card can handle the split signal, the input devices must be of the same signal format. You cannot send both an analog and digital signal at the same time; they must be like-kind signals. For more accurate and dependable results it is generally also recommended that you use similar display types on the two monitors.
Splitting DVI can be somewhat tricky if you are using a simple Y-cable. If you would prefer to take the pressure off of the process, use of a DVI converter can clear up some of the variables. The converter box allows you to accomplish things that are standard limitations of the cable, such as mixing signals and amplifying the signal strength.
Advantages Of Having An XP Notebook
May 19th
Notebooks are fun and very convenient to carry around. You can do a lot of things with its features, particularly being versatile and high portability. But people often get confused on what to use as an operating system to be installed in their device.
Which Operating System to Use?
A lot of individuals prefer an XP notebook than those that run on other operating systems. It may be pricier than Linux but it offers a lot of features that will make the users life a lot easier. It simplifies tasks that could take longer to finish when using other OS, many of which are essential to everyday tasks.
- One of the reasons people go for Windows XP is its capability to recognize drivers. It has a rich bundle of commonly used drivers that can help reduce the need to browse the internet for installation files. Many components of the notebook will be less worrisome to use if all drivers are installed automatically.
- Another factor would be the ability to run third party programs. Many programs are made to run on the Windows OS. Having it already installed on a notebook will gain you access to your needed programs without the hassle of finding ways to install it to your system.
- Also, Windows XP is known as an extremely stable operating system. There are entire websites dedicated to the problems that PC users have had with its successor, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 is still too new to really say how stable and secure the system is.
Although the price tag may still be a little steep for some, it is a well spent investment as the system will take care of most of the problems for you. This is important especially if the one using the device has little knowledge in troubleshooting and maintaining the integrity of its software.
The windows operating system can also open a wide variety of files. This may not be the case on other systems and you will take more time finding a way to see documents, videos and other media formats. Getting an Windows XP notebook is the simplest and wisest option of choice for average notebook users worldwide.
Finding Laptop Power Supplies for Macs
May 17th
If you own an Apple laptop, then you have probably heard about the fact that the power supplies that come with them aren’t always the most reliable. They have been the subject of several class action lawsuits, and complaints across computer forums everywhere. They even have a low rating, and many poor reviews on Apple’s website. And unfortunately, they often wear out and break long before you’re ready to upgrade your laptop, leaving you with a dying computer until you get a new power supply.
How to Replace Your Worn Out MacBook Power Supply
If you’ve had your laptop for a few years, and the power supply is just starting to break on your, then you’re probably in luck. Up until the MagSafe power connector was introduced, third-party adapters were, and continue to be, quite widespread. You can purchase these power adapters at a far lower cost than buying them from the Apple store, and they tend to be of a higher quality. This is because many of these companies specialize in accessories, so their whole reputation is riding on the quality of those accessories. This isn’t true with Apple; people will continue to buy their computers whether or not the laptop power adapter is sub-par.
If you have a newer computer, then finding a third-party Mac laptop power adapter is going to be next to impossible. Some companies are venturing into splicing the cables purchased from Apple to their own devices for resale, but they are unable to produce the MagSafe connector themselves due to licensing issues. Apple is not allowing third-parties access to use the technology involved with the MagSafe connector right now. Very few companies have taken the splicing route because it makes for an expensive product due to having to buy Mac’s MagSafe adapter straight from Apple, rather than having the flexibility to have them manufactured themselves at a huge discount.
Basically, while the introduction of the MagSafe power supply was a great idea, it is really strangling the market for third-party Mac power supplies. If you happen to break yours, you’re going to be stuck buying the expensive original part from Apple.
