Best Lighted Keyboard

in Keyboards,Peripherals

The lighted keyboard is the best invention for computer users who would like extra illumination in dark rooms, such as writers who find themselves late at night with good ideas or simply find that the best time to right is after the sun goes down. Many people know the frustration of being in the dark and squinting at their keyboard to find the letters that they need, so for many it is a good idea to invest in a lighted keyboard.

Top-Rated Lighted Keyboards

#1) Saitek Backlit Keyboard

There are distinctions between different keyboards, making one able to find a keyboard that fits their needs. If you are looking for quality, but not very pricey, the Saitek Eclipse Backlit Keyboard is a good find. This is a keyboard on the market today that is black and lights up using red LEDs. The device looks very nice, as it is black with offset onyx colored keys and when it is lit up, it looks very slick. This keyboard is also designed for maximum comfort of the user. It is easy to set up as it uses a USB port, which can be found on any computer today. It has a zero slope design, and an attached wrist design that supports wrists. What is also nice that other designs do not have, is that you can adjust the level of light. A negative aspect is that included with the Eclipse’s specs it says that it is comparable with Windows 98, SE, 2000, XP, and ME. It is possible that it works with vista and Windows 7 but it is not worth risking $52.99 to find out. In addition, another keyboard made by the same company with a very similar design has been known to have the letters of the keys to wear off and become only blobs of light; hopefully this one does not have the same problem.

#2) Blue LED Backlit Keyboard

Some people that are in need of a light up keyboard simply want to be able to see the keys in the dark, and not have to spend more for extra things. A simple lighted keyboard that can be found for $22.91 on sites like Amazon is the Black LED Lighted Keyboard W-9868BK USB. Being a less expensive model, there are some disadvantages right off the bat. The first is that the keys are hard to read when the light function is off. Of course this is easily remedied, but could be a problem if someone has it attached to their laptop and wants to save battery power. In addition, since it is a small keyboard some of the keys are positioned in different areas than many of us are used to. Buttons like delete and home are positioned vertically with the enter key, which could cause confusion when speed typing and trying to hit backspace and enter. What is nice about this keyboard is that it is compatible with newer systems, and can be plugged in and used right away. When the keys are lit up, they are very vivid but easy on the eyes as they use a blue light. In addition, since it is so compact, it is lighter and more portable than other keyboards.

#3) Virtually Indestructible Silicone Backlit Keyboard

A unique keyboard that is very portable and does not make noise when you type is the Glowtype Silicone Backlit Keyboard. This one is made from a rubbery material and can be rolled up and flexed around. Many people like how quiet and soft it feels on their fingers. Also, it can easily be cleaned as there is no space under keys that things can fall into, and spills of liquid will not completely destroy it. Though it looks cool, and would make a person stand out in an office, there are many reasons to pass this one up. Many users say that its illumination will turn off and of by itself. More complaints include that it is easy to mistype because you have to firmly press down on each key and that it can lock up.

Final Recommendation?

The best of these three would have to be the simple black LED keyboard. It does not miss out on function like the Glowtype, and it is compatible with the newer systems, unlike the Eclipse. However, if you happen to have an older operating system the Saitek Eclipse might be a better choice as it is only twenty dollars more and has some nice extra features.
